Good diagram explaining the long tail

after my less than clear explanation last week, a better diagram. As with loads of marketing theories, it's actually pretty straightforward.....

MegaPhone

This is MegaPhone and its pretty cool. Its an interactive billboard where people are invited to phone the board, after which they see themselves as an avatar on the billboard, where they can play games such as Space Invaders against others by controlling their avatar using their phone's keypad. Essentially it turns passive people into playing participants.

The BBC could find a use for MegaPhone at football matches, with opposing fans have a virtual kickabout at half-time to promote Match of the Day. Or it could be used at gigs such as the Electric Proms where crowds use their phones to vote for which song they want an artist to play next. Just a thought...

Really good definition of News Feeds (from the BBC)

What are News Feeds?

News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines and video in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.

Feeds are also known as RSS. There is some discussion as to what RSS stands for, but most people plump for 'Really Simple Syndication'. In essence, the feeds themselves are just web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people.

high-rise hotel

this isn't web 2 in the slightest, but it is cool and i did find out about it online. its a one-room hotel comprising of lounge area, bathroom, king-size bed and (like all good hotels) wi-fi and a minibar. the beauty of this hotel is that it has no fixed address and is currently being moved around europe. so essentially, its a designer caravan - although the beauty of this is that you don't have to risk the shame of being seen towing it down the M4.

Friday Afternoon Joke

Why did the burglar cut the legs off his bed?

Because he wanted to lie low for a while.

BBC Podcasts onto your iPhone or iPod Touch

I so hope Santa is going to give me an iPod Touch for Christmas, I'm not leaving it to chance - am going to the Apple Store in Regent's Street next weekend.

This is cool if you are lucky enough to have one already (or an iPhone) - getting BBC podcasts easily onto them. Take a look at BBC Radio Labs Blogs

youth media insight

Some interesting insight into media consumption trends in young people. Very international but I'm sure it won't be long until the rest of the developed world is on a par.

Students Today

It pretty much reinforces some interesting themes that we're seeing with the behaviour of kids, how the 'digital natives' use technology in their educational work. Using collaborative tools, always in 'Beta', Google Docs and Spreadsheets etc. It also highlights the fact that educators are really gonna have to start using far more creative and multi-layered tools in the classroom to make sure they can engage students effectively.

Reminds me of this : )

Mozilla Firefox

On the Mozilla front ... I don't think it's going to be that straightforward: we've been in touch with Mel, our IT co-ordinator (ITC), who's doing everything she can; the problem is that Mozilla is 'restricted access' - which sounds very Spooks - under the BBC's contract with Siemens; Mel in turn is talking to a Technology Services Adviser (TSA) provided by Future Media & Technology (FM&T). So for now, watch this space. A space currently filled with lots of acronyms.
